IETM

IETM stands for Interactive Electronic Technical Manual, and is a form of technical documentation growing in popularity within the U.S. DoD (Department of Defense). IETMs serve as templates that permit interaction with key technical data, such as assembly or maintenance instructions. The U.S. Navy has been a leading force in setting IETM standards, ranging from basic or Class 1 IETMs, through Class 5 IETMs which may include remote diagnostics and direct interaction with equipment.

The DoD is seeking to improve warfighter support, and reduce the growing costs of maintaining and operating defense systems. IETMs are seen an important in managing technical data throughout the product life cycle. In particular, due to their digital nature they can be integrated with other sustainment support functions like troubleshooting, which is much more difficult with traditional paper technical publications.
