Only five days after the French take the altitude record, a Lockheed F-104A Starfighter flown by the operations officer of the 83rd Intercept Squadron, Maj. Howard C. Johnson, breaks the old mark by flying to 91,249 ft. The achievement is particularly noteworthy as the F-104A is a standard fighter powered by a turbojet engine.
