What is an IETM?

An IETM is an Interactive Electronic Technical Manual, and if you have been producing tech pubs for the DoD, you are probably already an expert supplier. If IETMs are new to you, I recommend becoming familiar with the government agencies setting IETM standards and contracting with vendors, as well as software and service companies who make IETM creation easier. This may include the emerging S1000D standard.
I had a hard time finding the perfect IETM definition, and the Wikipedia entry was incomplete. However, a good place to start for the uninitiated is the O’Neil Solutions web site:
http://www.oneil.com/cfm/etmietm.cfm
And two excellent pages hosted by the U.S. Navy I recommend include the U.S. Navy Joint Services IETM Technology Working Group:
http://www.dt.navy.mil/tot-shi-sys/des-int-pro/tec-inf-sys/etm/index.html
http://navysgml.dt.navy.mil/classes.html
Keep in mind that if you don’t know what level IETM you are building, then it probably doesn’t matter!
